“So that it never happens again”

A veteran of the D-Day Landings in Normandy just 75 years ago to the day on when this post was drafted, was heard to say on BBC Radio 4, “We took part in it so that it never happens again”.

The Peace Party wonders if the people are listening to that veteran.  If they are, what is happening to guarantee, as far as this is possible, that it will never happen again?

Unsurprisingly, we see governments of every hue preparing to do just that as, for example, the UK sets aside around £57,000,000,000 every year on the military, clinging on to nuclear and other fearsome weaponry, promoting the armed forces in schools and, with Armed Forces Days, out on the streets of our towns and cities.

Of course, interviews with senior members of the armed forces all demonstrate their attachment to military security systems – they have a vested interest.

But the military does not represent the people.  Those we elect to form governments and councils say that they represent us (however flawed the electoral system is).  Yet they seem to be blindly following their predecessors, not considering that there can be much more effective ways to create safety, security and protection for their peoples than preparing for war, violence and killing.

One is reminded that a definition of insanity might be the repeating of actions time and time again even though they have been shown to be ineffective, if not terribly harmful.

You are urged to listen to the Jim Radford, D-Day Veteran, as he sports his CND badges, singing his folk-style composition “The Shores of Normandy” to be reminded what militarism in action really means: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPVnr6vPjDQ.

“We must not let this happen again.”  Readers are urged to support the Peace Party for a safer, kinder, more compassionate world.
