The Peace Party – Non-Violence
Justice, Enviroment

What are we remembering at this time of year?

In early November, 2020, Peace Party Candidate for Guildford at the 2019 General Election, wrote to the Editor of his local newspaper saying:

“The men and women who agreed with our governments’ instructions at the time to go out and kill and injure other people and destroy property – in the belief that that would ensure that the country and its way of life would be safe and secure for the future.  That aim was achieved – for a while – but at such an enormous cost.”

“Lives were extinguished on all sides, millions both in the military and in the non-combatants with so many families shattered.”

“We remember them all and cherish the memories of them.  We grieve for them.  We remember that so many, military and civilian, involved were traumatised to varying degrees by the acts of killing, face to face in the trenches, and at a distance, by shelling and bombing.  Memories of them are equally cherished.”

“Besides remembering the dead, wounded and traumatised by war, we are remembering that it is the duty of each one of us to ensure that our governments will never prepare to repeat what previous ones have done.  Making preparations for some to kill and destroy, can only expose the rest of us to being killed.”

“Encouraged by us, our elected representatives must work to ensure conflict is always resolved without the use of violence.  That white poppy I wear at Remembrance Time was first worn by women in the 1930s to remind everyone to reject war as government policy – for ever – as well as to remember everyone, everywhere who has suffered – and is suffering – as a result of war.”
